Year-End Tax Filing Done Right
Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, the final declaration replaces the traditional Self Assessment tax return. It is the single year-end submission that confirms your full income for the year, applies every relief you are entitled to, and finalises your tax bill.
Our final declaration service pulls everything together for you your quarterly figures, your other income, your adjustments and your reliefs then checks it line by line and files it with HMRC before the deadline. Done right, it is also your best chance to legitimately reduce what you owe.
EOPS vs Final Declaration: What You Actually Need to Submit
There is a lot of out-of-date information online about this, so let us be clear: the End of Period Statement (EOPS) has been removed. You do not need to submit one.
When MTD for Income Tax was first designed, the year-end process had two steps an EOPS for each separate income source, followed by a single Final Declaration combining everything.
So the current year-end process is simply:
- Four quarterly updates during the year (one per income source per quarter).
- One Final Declaration after the year ends, confirming everything and finalising your tax.
EOPS has been permanently removed
Following the 2023 Autumn Statement and April 2024 amendment regulations, HMRC scrapped the End of Period Statement. Any guidance telling you to file an EOPS is out of date. We work to the current rules.
If a website, software guide or older article still tells you to file an EOPS, it is out of date. We work to the current rules one final declaration, done properly.
What We Finalise in Your Declaration
The final declaration is where your tax position is settled for the year. We pull together and confirm:
- Business and property income from your quarterly updates, with year-end accounting adjustments.
- Accounting adjustments such as accruals, prepayments, capital allowances and private-use adjustments.
- All other income employment/PAYE, dividends, savings interest, pensions and any capital gains.
- Reliefs and allowances personal allowance, trading allowance, property allowance, capital allowances and more.
The result is an accurate, complete picture of your tax for the year submitted in one final declaration that replaces the old Self Assessment return.
Benefits of a Professional Year-End Review
- Nothing missed every income source and every claimable relief is accounted for.
- Lower tax, legitimately we identify allowances and reliefs many people overlook.
- Accuracy you can trust a qualified accountant checks the figures before they reach HMRC.
- No deadline risk filed before 31 January, well clear of penalties.
- Clarity on what you owe you know your tax bill in good time, not at the last minute.
Deadlines and Penalties
Final declaration deadline: 31 January
For the 2026/27 tax year, the final declaration is due by 31 January 2028 — the same date as the old Self Assessment deadline.
Not covered by the soft-landing period
Unlike 2026/27 quarterly updates, the final declaration is not covered by the soft-landing period. Late filing earns penalty points, four points trigger a £200 penalty. Late payment adds further penalties and interest.
The final declaration deadline is one you cannot afford to miss. We file yours early so penalties and interest are never a concern.
Tax Relief Optimisation
Filing accurately is the minimum. The real value of a year-end review is paying no more tax than you legally have to. As part of your final declaration, we look for opportunities such as:
- Capital allowances on equipment, vehicles and qualifying assets.
- Allowable expenses that are commonly under-claimed by sole traders and landlords.
- The trading and property allowances where they work in your favour.
- Pension and Gift Aid relief applied correctly to reduce your liability.
- Loss relief used in the most beneficial way against other income.
Because we keep your records current throughout the year, we can flag many of these before year-end when there is still time to act.
