Tax Made Simple
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a major HMRC initiative designed to modernise the UK tax system by requiring businesses and individuals to keep digital records and submit tax information using compatible software.
The goal is to make tax administration efficient, accurate, and easy to manage, reducing errors and improving compliance.
From an income tax perspective, the traditional self-assessment tax return process will be replaced, if there’s no income to consider other than MTD income, with taxpayers required to submit four quarterly updates to HMRC each year, followed by a Final Declaration replacing the traditional self-assessment tax return.

What You Must Do Under MTD?
Keep Digital Records
- All transaction data must be stored digitally.
- Paper records will no longer meet legal requirements.
Use MTD-Compatible Software
Approved software must:
- Record income and expenses.
- Maintain digital links between data sources.
- Submit updates and returns digitally.
Provide More Regular Updates to HMRC
Under MTD ITSA:
- Quarterly submissions.
- An end of year statement.
- A final declaration replacing the traditional tax return.
Ensure Digital Links (No Copy & Paste)
- Spreadsheets can be used only if linked digitally to bridging software.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Failure to Submit Digital Returns
- Missing updates or returns triggers points-based penalties
- If you don’t use functional and compatible software to file your returns, you could receive a penalty of £400 for every return you file
Late Filing Penalties
- Each late submission adds a point
- Accruing 2 penalty points for annual submissions, 4 for quarterly submissions or 5 for monthly submissions will all result in a £200 fine
- Penalty points will expire after a 2 year period starting from the month after the penalty point was issued
- Possible to receive separate penalties for MTD for ITSA, CT and VAT
Late Payment Penalties
Late payment penalties are based on a tiered system after 15 and 30 days, rather than a single deadline penalty.
- 15 Days Late: No penalty
- 16-30 Days Late: A penalty of 3% (4% from April 2027) of the tax owed at day 15 is charged
- 31+ Days Late: A second penalty of 3% (4% from April 2027) of the tax owed at day 30 is added
- Interest: From day 31, an additional 10% per annum penalty interest accrues daily on the outstanding amount
Failure to Keep Digital Records
- Maximum Penalty: Up to £3,000 for each failure to keep or preserve records in the prescribed digital format
- Scope: Records must be maintained in functional compatible software, not just manually (e.g., paper or disconnected spreadsheets)
