MTD Deadlines for Aberdeen Businesses

From 6 April 2026, Aberdeen sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must submit quarterly digital tax updates to HMRC. Most offshore contractors work through PSCs, so their company income falls under MTD Corporation Tax (planned April 2027). But if a contractor also has property income above the threshold, that triggers personal MTD ITSA from April 2026 regardless. The threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028.

How We Recovered £16,200 for a Bridge of Don Subsea Engineer

A senior subsea inspection engineer based in Bridge of Don came to us in early 2026 for a routine MTD readiness review. Working through his own PSC on a 6-weeks-on / 6-weeks-off rotation split between Norwegian Continental Shelf work and West African campaigns, he had a gross contract value of around £145,000 per year. On paper his tax affairs looked straightforward. In reality they were quietly leaking money.

His previous accountant had treated all overseas project days as standard UK working days, missing the offshore day count rules. Multi-currency income from the Norwegian client had been converted using inconsistent exchange rates. PPE (offshore-graded coveralls, boots, safety equipment) had not been claimed. Training certifications (BOSIET, HUET) were claimed at flat rates rather than actual cost. Pension contributions had been minimal despite the tax-efficiency at his Scottish higher-rate income level.

What We Did

  • Reviewed rotation records against offshore day count qualifying rules and repositioned residence and working-day treatment
  • Reconstructed multi-currency income using consistent HMRC-recognised monthly average rates across two prior years
  • Identified £4,800 in unclaimed offshore PPE and safety equipment across two rotation cycles
  • Reworked training and certification claims from flat rate to actual cost, capturing £2,100/year previously missed
  • Restructured PSC extraction to £12,570 salary plus optimised dividends and £40,000 employer pension contribution, saving £7,600 in Corporation Tax
  • Amended two previous years' Self Assessment returns for missed offshore-related deductions
  • Set up Xero with multi-currency configuration ready for MTD ITSA and MTD Corporation Tax

Lesson: Scottish tax bands, offshore day counts, PPE claims, and pension optimisation combine in ways most generalist accountants miss. At Aberdeen contractor income levels, this typically costs individuals £8,000-£20,000/year in unnecessary tax.

Why Aberdeen Chooses Us

Why Aberdeen Businesses Choose Us for MTD Compliance

Regional Aberdeen firms often lack the tax planning depth for high-earning international contractors. Mainland UK firms often lack Scottish tax awareness and treat offshore day counts as an afterthought. We combine both, at fixed monthly rates from £40.

ICAEW Chartered Status

The highest UK accountancy qualification, publicly verifiable at find.icaew.com under registration Z10zyrJ.

Offshore Contractor Expertise

Rotation patterns, offshore day counts, PPE and training deductions, international project income, and residency planning that can save five-figure sums annually.

Scottish Rate of Income Tax Fluency

We handle the different rate bands correctly, particularly critical for higher earners hit by the Scottish additional rates that mainland firms sometimes miss.

Aberdeen-Realistic Pricing

Fixed monthly fees from £40, without the Big Four Aberdeen office premiums or the travel-inclusive pricing mainland firms add for NE Scotland clients.

HMRC Enquiry Defence

We have represented North East Scotland clients through complex enquiries where cross-border income and offshore day counts were the key HMRC focus.

Fully Remote (Rotation-Friendly)

Video calls fit around rotation patterns in a way traditional office visits cannot. We respond same-day regardless of where you are physically working.

Aberdeen-Specific Issues

Aberdeen-Specific MTD Considerations

The regional tax challenges that make MTD different (and harder) for Aberdeen businesses and offshore contractors.

1

Scottish Rate of Income Tax Bands

Scotland has different Income Tax rate bands from the rest of the UK, and the top rate above £125,140 hits Aberdeen high earners noticeably harder than equivalent earners in England. MTD ITSA quarterly submissions capture UK-wide income, but Final Declaration calculations must apply Scottish rates for Scottish residents. Getting this wrong is a common mainland-firm error.

2

Offshore Day Count Treatment

For contractors working offshore, careful day count tracking supports positions ranging from split-year residency treatment through to Foreign Earnings Deduction. This requires deliberate record-keeping supported by rotation schedules, boarding cards, offshore installation manifests, and rig-by-rig timesheets. Get the documentation right and it becomes a defensible tax position.

3

LBTT and Additional Dwelling Supplement

Scotland uses LBTT rather than Stamp Duty Land Tax for property purchases. Additional Dwelling Supplement adds 8% on top for second homes and buy-to-let. This affects Aberdeen landlord decisions substantially, particularly for contractors who also own property in England where SDLT rules differ.

4

Multi-Currency Contract Income

Norwegian sector work often invoices in NOK or EUR, West African campaigns in USD, and Australian projects in AUD. HMRC accepts monthly average rates for Income Tax purposes, but they must be applied consistently rather than cherry-picked. MTD software with proper multi-currency support handles this cleanly.

5

PPE and Offshore Training Deductions

Offshore-graded coveralls, safety boots, hi-vis kit, respiratory equipment, and certification training (BOSIET, HUET, MIST, offshore medical) are all deductible. Many contractors either miss these entirely or claim at inadequate levels. Actual receipted costs typically exceed £3,000-£6,000/year for active offshore workers.

6

Career Transition to Energy Sector

Aberdeen professionals moving from oil and gas into offshore wind, hydrogen, or CCS work face specific tax planning around retraining costs, new certifications, and R&D credit eligibility for genuinely novel technology work. This transition creates real tax opportunities that generic accountants routinely miss.

Transparent Aberdeen Pricing

Aberdeen FAQs

Aberdeen MTD FAQs

The most common questions Aberdeen business owners and offshore contractors ask before switching to a chartered MTD specialist.

Do you serve all Aberdeen postcodes?

Yes. We work with clients right across AB10 to AB25 within Aberdeen, and out through Aberdeenshire including Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Stonehaven, Ellon, Inverurie, and rural coastal areas. Whether you are in Bridge of Don, Cults, Dyce, Torry, or along the coast, we cover your area.

Do you actually understand offshore contractor tax?

Yes, in depth. Offshore day counts, split-year residency treatment, multi-currency handling, PPE and certification training deductions, and residency planning for genuinely international work patterns are core to our Aberdeen client base. This is specialist expertise we apply daily, not something we handle occasionally.

How does Scottish tax actually differ under MTD?

MTD ITSA is a UK-wide scheme applied identically in Scotland, but the tax rates applied at Final Declaration differ. Scottish taxpayers face a starter rate (19%), basic rate (20%), intermediate rate (21%), higher rate (42%), and top rate (48%) rather than the simpler English structure. At Aberdeen high-earner income levels, this can meaningfully change tax position. Mainland firms sometimes miss the top rate application above £125,140.

Do you handle Norwegian and West African project income?

Yes. Multi-currency income from Norwegian, Angolan, Nigerian, Ghanaian, Australian, and Middle Eastern projects is standard work for our Aberdeen clients. We configure software with consistent HMRC-recognised rate treatment, handle withholding tax offset positions, and support any residency planning that applies.

Do you work with Aberdeen landlords?

Yes, particularly executive residential landlords in the West End, Cults, and Milltimber corridors, and contractor-focused serviced accommodation providers. We handle LBTT and Additional Dwelling Supplement planning, MTD ITSA for portfolio landlords, and cross-border property positions when contractors also own property in England. See our complete MTD for Landlords guide.

What about energy transition and offshore wind work?

Yes, this is a growing part of our Aberdeen practice. Engineers and specialists moving from oil and gas into offshore wind, hydrogen, or CCS work face specific opportunities around retraining cost treatment, R&D tax credits for novel technology work, and structuring around long-duration installation contracts.

When does MTD ITSA start for Aberdeen offshore contractors?

From 6 April 2026 for self-employed sole traders with qualifying income over £50,000. Most offshore contractors work through PSCs rather than as sole traders, so their company income falls under MTD Corporation Tax (planned April 2027). But if a contractor also has property income above the threshold, that triggers personal MTD ITSA from April 2026 regardless.

Can you help me if I am starting an Aberdeen offshore contract next month?

Yes. New offshore contractors setting up their first PSC or moving from PAYE to self-employment benefit from getting the structure right from day one. Common setup includes PSC formation with proper share structure, VAT registration decision, software configuration, and IR35 assessment of the target contract. We can complete initial setup within 2-3 weeks.
