MTD Help: How to Get Expert Support When You Are Stuck
Getting stuck with Making Tax Digital is not a failure. It is normal. HMRC’s systems have quirks, accounting software has bugs, VAT calculations can be confusing, and the quarterly submission process has genuine complexity that catches even experienced business owners. What matters is knowing where to get help quickly, before a fixable problem becomes a missed deadline.
This guide maps out every MTD help resource available to you in 2026, from free HMRC helplines to software support channels to professional accountant help. We also cover the 10 most common MTD problems and how to solve each one.

Getting Help From HMRC
HMRC MTD Helpline: 0300 200 3310
This is HMRC’s primary helpline for MTD queries. They handle registration issues, submission problems, and general MTD ITSA questions. Phone lines are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Expect 30 to 60 minutes hold time during busy periods.
HMRC VAT Helpline: 0300 200 3700
For MTD VAT specific queries including VAT registration, MTD VAT submission errors, and VAT calculation questions. Separate from the general MTD line.
HMRC Online Chat
Available via gov.uk for certain query types. Not all MTD questions can be handled via chat, but simpler queries (checking registration status, payment allocation questions) often can. Access via the ‘Contact HMRC’ page on gov.uk and select the relevant topic.
HMRC Online Forum
HMRC maintains a community forum where taxpayers can ask questions. HMRC staff occasionally respond, and experienced taxpayers often provide helpful answers. Useful for non-urgent questions where you want to see if others have faced the same issue.
Personal Tax Account and Business Tax Account
Many MTD issues can be resolved through your online HMRC accounts without calling. You can check your MTD registration status, view penalty points, see your filing history, set up Direct Debit, and manage agent authorisations all through your tax account on gov.uk.
HMRC limitation: HMRC staff can help with HMRC system issues, registration, and penalty queries. They cannot troubleshoot your accounting software, fix bank feed problems, or advise on tax planning. For software problems, contact your software provider. For tax advice, contact a chartered accountant.

10 Most Common MTD Problems (and How to Fix Them)
Problem 1: ‘Error Submitting to HMRC’ Message
This usually means the connection between your software and HMRC’s MTD API has failed. Common causes: HMRC system downtime, expired HMRC authorisation token, or internet connectivity issue.
Fix: Wait 30 minutes and retry. If persistent, re-authorise your software with HMRC (revoke and re-connect in your software settings). Check HMRC’s service availability page on gov.uk for system outages.
Problem 2: Bank Feed Disconnected
Bank feeds disconnect when your bank updates security protocols, your online banking credentials change, or your bank’s connection to the software provider expires.
Fix: Go to your software’s bank settings, disconnect the feed, then reconnect using your current bank login credentials. If reconnection fails, contact your software provider’s support. Some banks require re-authentication every 90 days under Open Banking rules.
Problem 3: VAT Return Figures Look Wrong
Fix: Check for uncategorised transactions (these do not appear in VAT calculations). Check for transactions assigned to the wrong VAT rate. Check the date range matches the correct quarter. Review our VAT return guide for the 9-box calculation breakdown.
Problem 4: Cannot Register for MTD
Fix: Ensure you have a Government Gateway account. For MTD VAT, you need a VAT registration number. For MTD ITSA, you need a UTR and National Insurance number. If registration fails, call HMRC on 0300 200 3310. Our registration walkthrough covers every step.
Problem 5: Duplicate Transactions From Bank Feed
Fix: Usually caused by manually entering a transaction AND the bank feed importing the same transaction. Most software has a duplicate detection feature. If duplicates exist, delete the manual entry and keep the bank-fed version (it maintains the digital link chain).
Problem 6: Government Gateway Password Issues
Fix: Reset via gov.uk using the ‘Problems signing in’ link. You need your User ID (sent when you registered) and the email or phone number linked to your account. If completely locked out, call 0300 200 3600. Keep your Gateway credentials in a password manager to prevent this recurring.
Problem 7: Quarterly Submission Shows Wrong Period
Fix: Check your software’s MTD settings to confirm the correct accounting period dates. MTD ITSA quarters align with the tax year (6 Apr to 5 Jul, etc.). MTD VAT quarters align with your VAT registration period (which may differ from the tax year). Incorrect period settings cause data to appear in the wrong submission.
Problem 8: Cannot Claim an Expense (Software Will Not Allow It)
Fix: This is usually a categorisation issue, not a software bug. Check the expense category. Some categories have restrictions (entertainment is not claimable, for example). If the expense is genuinely allowable but your software does not have the right category, create a custom category or contact your accountant. See our record keeping guide for allowable expense categories.
Problem 9: HMRC Penalty Notice Received
Fix: Do not panic. Check whether the penalty is for late submission (points-based) or late payment (percentage-based). Check whether you have a reasonable excuse for appeal. Contact HMRC within 30 days to appeal if applicable. See our penalty guide for appeal procedures and our penalty prevention guide for future protection.
Problem 10: Overwhelmed and Do Not Know Where to Start
Fix: This is the most common ‘problem’ we hear. The answer is: start with software. Set up FreeAgent free via NatWest, connect your bank feed, and categorise one week of transactions. That single step breaks the paralysis. Or call a chartered accountant for a free consultation where they walk you through the entire process. See our small business MTD guide for the complete 6-step action plan.
When to Stop DIY and Hire a Professional
Some MTD problems are solvable yourself. Others need professional help. Here is the dividing line:
Handle It Yourself
- Simple bank feed reconnection
- Basic transaction categorisation
- Password resets and login issues
- Straightforward quarterly submission (once you have done it once)
- Setting up Direct Debit
- Reading HMRC correspondence (understanding what they are asking)
Get Professional Help
- VAT calculation errors you cannot identify
- HMRC enquiry or compliance check letter
- Penalty appeal preparation
- Choosing between VAT schemes (Standard vs Flat Rate)
- Complex mixed-income situations (self-employment plus rental plus PAYE)
- Year-end tax planning and optimisation
- MTD ITSA plus MTD VAT combined compliance
- Data migration from previous accountant or software
- Anything involving significant financial decisions or HMRC interaction
For guidance on finding the right professional, see our accountant hiring checklist and pricing guide.
The cost of waiting too long: Most business owners who eventually hire an accountant say they wish they had done it sooner. The tax savings identified in the first year typically exceed the accountant fee. And the time saved (4 to 6 hours per quarter for DIY vs 15 minutes with an accountant handling it) has real value.

Case Study: From Panic to Sorted in 48 Hours
A self-employed wedding photographer based in the Bristol area contacted us at 4pm on a Thursday, 3 working days before her Q2 MTD VAT submission deadline. She had been managing her own MTD VAT via QuickBooks for 6 quarters but had encountered a problem she could not resolve: her VAT return was showing a £4,200 VAT liability when she expected approximately £1,800 based on her own calculations.
The problems we found:
- 12 transactions miscategorised as standard-rated (20%) when they should have been zero-rated (client shoots in EU countries, services outside UK VAT scope)
- 3 duplicate transactions from a bank feed reconnection 2 months earlier
- 1 personal purchase incorrectly entered as a business expense
- Flat Rate Scheme percentage set to 14.5% instead of correct 11% for photography
What we did:
- Reviewed the full Q2 transaction list remotely via QuickBooks Accountant access (granted within 15 minutes)
- Corrected the 12 miscategorised transactions (EU shoots to outside scope)
- Deleted the 3 duplicate entries
- Removed the personal purchase
- Corrected the Flat Rate Scheme percentage to 11%
- Recalculated: corrected VAT liability was £1,720 (vs the incorrect £4,200)
- Submitted the corrected return on Friday morning (2 days before deadline)
Outcome: Correct VAT return filed on time. Client saved £2,480 that would have been overpaid to HMRC (£4,200 incorrect minus £1,720 correct). The FRS percentage correction alone saved approximately £800 per year going forward. Our emergency one-off fee: £180. She subsequently moved to our ongoing £95 per month service to prevent similar issues recurring. Total value delivered in the first engagement: £2,480 VAT saving plus approximately £800 per year ongoing FRS correction.
MTD Help: FAQs
What is the HMRC helpline number for MTD?
0300 200 3310 for general MTD queries. 0300 200 3700 for MTD VAT specifically. 0300 200 3835 for payment difficulties. Lines open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.
Can HMRC help me with my accounting software?
No. HMRC supports HMRC systems only (Government Gateway, registration, filing errors on their end). Software issues (bank feeds, categorisation, calculations) must go to your software provider’s support team.
What is the fastest way to get MTD help?
For software issues: in-app chat (FreeAgent and QuickBooks respond within hours). For HMRC issues: call between 10am and 2pm Tuesday to Thursday. For complex problems: contact a chartered accountant (same-day response typical).
Is there a free MTD helpline?
HMRC’s helplines are free (0300 numbers charged at local rate). Software providers’ help is included in your subscription. For professional accountant advice, many offer free initial consultations (30 minutes). Our consultation is free.
What do I do if my MTD submission fails?
Screenshot the error message. Wait 30 minutes and retry (often resolves connection issues). If persistent, re-authorise your software with HMRC. If still failing, contact your software provider with the error screenshot. File before the deadline.
Can I get help with MTD if I have no accountant?
Yes. HMRC helplines, software support, and online resources are all available without an accountant. However, for tax advice, VAT scheme decisions, penalty appeals, or complex situations, a chartered accountant provides expertise that HMRC and software support cannot.
How do I find a chartered accountant for MTD help?
ICAEW directory (find.icaew.com), ACCA directory, software advisor directories (Xero, QuickBooks), or search ‘MTD accountant’ plus your city. Check qualifications, ask about MTD experience, and verify credentials independently.
What if I am stuck and the deadline is tomorrow?
Submit what you have. An imperfect but timely submission avoids penalty points. Errors under £10,000 can be corrected on your next return. A late but perfect return earns a penalty point. Timeliness beats perfection.
Does my software provider offer MTD training?
Most do. FreeAgent, Xero, QuickBooks, and Sage all offer free webinars, video tutorials, and written guides. Check their learning hubs. FreeAgent’s getting-started guide is particularly good for beginners.
Can I get help from HMRC in person?
HMRC has very limited in-person services. Most tax offices are closed to the public. All MTD support is via phone, online, or post. In-person help is effectively not available for MTD queries.
What if HMRC’s system is down and I cannot submit?
HMRC system outages are a reasonable excuse for late filing if you can evidence that you attempted to submit during the outage. Screenshot the error with date and time. Submit as soon as the system is available. Report the outage to HMRC.
How much does professional MTD help cost?
One-off consultations: often free (30 minutes). Emergency troubleshooting: £100 to £250 per incident. Ongoing monthly packages: £40 to £300 depending on complexity. See our pricing guide for detailed breakdowns.
Can I switch from DIY to accountant-managed MTD mid-year?
Yes. Switching mid-year is straightforward. Your new accountant reviews what has been filed so far, corrects any errors, and takes over remaining submissions. No need to wait for a new tax year.
Where can I learn about MTD for free?
Our blog (40+ free guides), HMRC gov.uk guidance, software provider learning hubs (FreeAgent, Xero, QuickBooks), ICAEW and ACCA websites, and HMRC YouTube videos. All free.
What is the most common reason people need MTD help?
Software confusion. Specifically: transactions miscategorised, VAT rates applied incorrectly, bank feeds disconnected without noticing, and not understanding the difference between submitting a return and paying the tax due. All solvable with proper setup and weekly reconciliation.
