HMRC may have already signed you up

This is the part most people have not caught up with.

When MTD for Income Tax started in April 2026, around 864,000 sole traders and landlords were meant to be in it. By the first deadline in August, only about 570,000 had signed up. That left roughly 294,000 people who were legally in MTD and had done nothing about it.

So from September 2026, HMRC started signing them up itself. It is happening in stages, and HMRC writes to each person once they have been enrolled. Two things about that letter are worth knowing.

It does not go to your accountant. HMRC sends it to you and nobody else. If you have an accountant and you do not forward it, they have no idea your filing obligations have started.

Being enrolled is not being set up. The letter means you are in the system. It does not mean you have software, it does not mean your bank is connected, and it does not mean your records from April exist in a digital form. All of that is still on you, and now with less time.

If a letter has turned up and you were not expecting it, that is what it is. Send it to us and we will sort out what comes next.

Better to register yourself than wait

If you have not had a letter yet but you know you should be in MTD, do not sit and wait for one. Registering yourself is better for three practical reasons.

You get to choose your software properly

Once HMRC enrols you, the clock is already running and you are picking under pressure. Software you choose in a hurry is software you end up switching away from later.

HMRC is working from old figures

The automatic process uses your 2024/25 tax return. If your business has since closed, or your rental income stopped, HMRC does not know that. People are being enrolled into obligations that no longer apply to them.

A pending exemption can get overtaken

If you have applied for an exemption and it has not come back yet, the automatic process can sign you up anyway.

You can still register yourself at any point, and we can still register you, even while HMRC's automatic enrolment is running.

What we actually do

Registration on its own takes about twenty minutes. It is everything either side of it that causes the trouble, so that is what we handle.

We check whether you are even in scope

Before anything else. Qualifying income is measured on gross income before expenses, and it combines self employment and property. A lot of people are in when they think they are out, and some are out when they have been told they are in.

We register you with HMRC

Through our Agent Services Account, once you have authorised us. You do not need a Government Gateway login or a working one if yours has gone missing.

We get agent authorisation in place

So HMRC deals with us rather than you from that point on.

We choose your software

Based on what you actually do, not what is most advertised. Sole trader with a van is a different answer from a landlord with four properties.

We set it up and connect your bank

Bank feed, categories, receipt capture on your phone. Working, not just installed.

We rebuild your records back to 6 April

This is the part people underestimate. Your digital records have to run from the start of the tax year, so if you are registering now there is catching up to do. We do it.

We file your first quarterly update

So you can see what the cycle actually looks like before you decide whether to keep doing it yourself.

We tell you what happens next

Your deadlines, what we need from you and when, and what your Final Declaration will involve.

What this costs

Most people take the plan option, because the work that follows registration is the work that repeats.

Our ongoing plans run from £60 to £100 a month if you do the data entry and we review and submit, or £100 to £150 a month for the full service including bookkeeping, year end and tax planning. Full detail on our MTD service for the self employed and our MTD service for landlords.

Are you actually required to register?

Worth being sure, because the rule catches people out in both directions.

MTD for Income Tax applies if your qualifying income is over the threshold. Qualifying income means gross income before expenses, not profit. A courier turning over £56,000 with £20,000 of costs is in scope, even though the profit is nowhere near it.

It is also combined. Self-employment and property income are added together, and neither has to reach the threshold on its own.

The figure HMRC uses comes from your earlier tax return, not the year you are currently in. Which means the decision has usually already been made by the time it affects you.

Our guide to MTD thresholds sets out the dates and the figures, and MTD qualifying income explains exactly what counts.

If you think you should not be in MTD at all, do not wait for the automatic process to reach you. Contact HMRC, or let us do it. The usual reasons are that your qualifying income sources stopped before April 2026, or that an exemption applies. Our guide to MTD exemptions covers who qualifies and what evidence is needed.

If you are registering late

Plenty of people are, and the position is better than it feels.

HMRC has confirmed a soft landing for the 2026/27 tax year. No penalty points for late quarterly updates in the first year. It does not cover your Final Declaration, it does not cover paying tax late, and it does not cover failing to keep digital records. But a missed quarterly update, this year, does not cost you a penalty point. The detail is in our guide to the MTD soft landing.

The genuinely useful part is that quarterly updates are cumulative. Each one reports the year to date rather than just that quarter. So catching up means getting your records straight once, not filing a backlog of separate returns.

We take on people who are months behind every week. Tell us where you actually are, not where you think you should be, and we will tell you what it takes.

How it works

Most people are registered and filing within 3 to 5 working days of the first call.

1

One short call

Fifteen minutes. What you do, roughly what you turn over, whether you have had a letter from HMRC. Free, and no chasing afterwards if it is not for you.

2

You authorise us

A single HMRC authorisation step on your side. We walk you through it.

3

We do the registration

Usually the same week. You are not involved beyond the authorisation.

4

We set up your software

Chosen, installed, connected to your bank, with receipt capture on your phone if you want it.

5

We rebuild your records

Back to 6 April, from your bank data and whatever receipts and invoices you have.

6

We file your first update

So you can see what the cycle actually looks like before you decide whether to keep doing it yourself.

Why not just do it yourself

You can, and if your affairs are simple it is manageable. Our guide on how to register for MTD walks through the HMRC screens step by step, free, and plenty of people use it and never contact us.

The reason people hand it over is rarely the registration itself. It is the three things around it. Choosing software you will not regret in six months. Rebuilding records back to April when you have not been keeping them that way. And realising that registration was the easy part, and now there are four quarterly updates and a Final Declaration every year, forever.

Common questions

Yes. We register you through our Agent Services Account once you have authorised us, so you do not need a working Gateway login of your own.

Being enrolled is not the same as being ready. You still need recognised software, a connected bank feed, and digital records going back to 6 April. That is what we set up. Forward us the letter and we will tell you what is outstanding.

The registration itself is quick. Getting you properly set up, with software connected and records rebuilt to the start of the tax year, usually takes 3 to 5 working days from the first call.

An HMRC authorisation, your business or property start dates, your bank data for the tax year so far, and whatever receipts and invoices you have. We work with what exists rather than asking you to produce something tidy first.

Yes, any accountant with an Agent Services Account can. If you already have an accountant, ask them. If they are not set up for MTD, which is more common than you would expect, that is usually the reason people come to us.

Then the priority is telling HMRC before the automatic process signs you up. We can do that for you, including applying for an exemption where one applies.

Yes. MTD for VAT is a separate registration with its own quarterly cycle. If you need both, see our MTD VAT accounting service and we will handle them together.

Whatever fits what you do. We are not tied to one provider. If budget matters, there are free HMRC accounting software options that meet the rules in full, and we compare the paid platforms in our guide to the best MTD software in the UK.

If you were mandated from April 2026, it has already passed. That is why HMRC is enrolling people automatically. If that is you, register now rather than waiting for the letter.
