Do I Need to Sign Up for Making Tax Digital?
Most people who ask this have already had a go at working it out and come away unsure. That is not your fault. The rule sounds simple and then turns out to depend on a number most people have never looked at.
Here is the short version. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies based on your qualifying income, which is your gross income before expenses, from self employment and UK property added together. Not your profit. Not your take home. The money that came in, before you took anything off it.
Run your numbers through the checker below and it will tell you whether you are in, which tax year you come into scope, and what to do about it.

Does Making Tax Digital apply to you?
Four questions. We will tell you whether you are in scope, which tax year you come in, and what to do next.
Question 1 of 4
What to do next
MTD for VAT has applied to every VAT registered business since April 2022, whatever your turnover, and HMRC's old free online VAT form has closed. That obligation runs on its own quarterly cycle.
Where to go from here

This checker gives general guidance based on HMRC's published thresholds. It is not tax advice and does not cover every situation. If your circumstances are unusual, speak to us or to HMRC.
Why so many people get this wrong
Three things trip people up, and they trip up sensible people with decent records.
It is measured on gross income, not profit.
This is the big one. A courier turning over £56,000 with £20,000 of fuel, insurance and vehicle costs has qualifying income of £56,000. The profit is £36,000, but the profit is not what the test looks at.
The same thing catches landlords with a mortgage. Rent of £55,000 with heavy interest payments still counts as £55,000.
It adds your income sources together.
If you have a trade and a rental property, they go in the same pot. Neither one has to reach the threshold on its own. Someone with £30,000 of freelance work and £25,000 of rent is over £50,000, even though each side looks modest.
It is based on an earlier tax year.
HMRC looks at the qualifying income reported on an earlier return, not the year you are currently living through. So by the time MTD starts affecting you, the decision was made from figures you filed a while ago.
That also means it does not switch off the moment your income dips. If you were mandated, you stay mandated until HMRC says otherwise.
The thresholds and when they bite
MTD for Income Tax is arriving in stages. Each stage pulls in a lower band of income.
Qualifying income | You come into MTD from |
More than £50,000 | 6 April 2026 |
More than £30,000 | April 2027 |
More than £20,000 | April 2028 |
So if you are sitting at £35,000 today and thinking this does not apply to you, it does. Just not yet. You have until April 2027, which is less time than it sounds once you factor in choosing software and getting your records into a digital form.
Our guide to MTD thresholds goes through each stage in more detail, and MTD qualifying income explains exactly which income sources count and which are left out.
What counts, and what does not
Counts towards qualifying income
Self employment turnover, before expenses. UK property income, before expenses. Income from more than one trade, added together. Rent a room income, even where the relief applies.
Does not count
Employment income through PAYE. Dividends. Interest. Pension income. Capital gains, including from selling a property. Income from a limited company you run, which is a separate matter entirely.
One that catches people out: the £1,000 trading allowance reduces your tax bill but does not reduce your qualifying income, unless the income is covered in full and never reported on a return at all. We cover that properly in our guide to the trading income allowance and MTD.
HMRC may have already decided for you
Worth knowing before you go any further.
When the first MTD deadline passed in August 2026, a large number of people who should have been signed up had not been. So from September 2026, HMRC started signing them up automatically.
If a letter has arrived telling you that you are now in MTD, that is what happened. Two things follow from it.
It does not go to your accountant. HMRC writes to you and nobody else, so if you have an accountant they will not know unless you tell them.
And being enrolled is not the same as being ready. You still need recognised software, a connected bank feed, and digital records going back to the start of the tax year. Our guide to how to register for MTD covers what registration involves, whether you do it yourself or HMRC has done it for you.
If the checker says you are in scope now
You are in the group mandated from April 2026, and there are four quarterly updates and a Final Declaration in your tax year.
If you have not started, the position is better than it feels. HMRC has confirmed a soft landing for 2026/27 with no penalty points for late quarterly updates in the first year. It does not cover your Final Declaration, it does not cover paying late, and it does not cover record keeping failures. But a missed quarterly update, this year, does not cost you a point. The detail is in our guide to the MTD soft landing.
The genuinely helpful part is that quarterly updates are cumulative. Each one reports the year to date, so catching up means sorting your records once rather than filing a pile of separate returns.
Three things to do, in this order. Confirm you are registered. Get recognised software in place. Rebuild your records back to 6 April.
If you would rather hand that over, our MTD registration service covers all three.
If the checker says you are in scope later
You have time, and the useful thing to do with it is small.
Start recording digitally now. Not because you have to, but because the painful part of MTD is never the filing. It is going back and reconstructing nine months of transactions under time pressure because nothing was recorded as it happened.
If you are already using software, check it is on HMRC’s recognised list. Plenty of perfectly good bookkeeping tools are not. We compare the main options in our guide to the best MTD software in the UK, and there are free HMRC accounting software choices that meet the rules in full.
Our MTD checklist runs through what to have in place before your year starts.
If the checker says you are not in scope
Two things still worth knowing.
The thresholds are coming down. At £20,000 from April 2028, a lot of people with a modest side income will be inside the net. If you are anywhere near that, the position is worth rechecking each year rather than assuming.
And if you are VAT registered, MTD for VAT already applies to you regardless of any of this. It has been mandatory for all VAT registered businesses since April 2022, with no turnover threshold, and HMRC’s old free online VAT form has closed. That is a separate obligation with its own quarterly cycle, covered on our MTD VAT accounting page.
Common questions
Is qualifying income my profit or my turnover?
Turnover, before any expenses are deducted. This is the single most common misunderstanding, and it is why people with low profits are often still in scope.
Does employment income count?
No. PAYE employment, dividends, interest, pensions and capital gains are all outside the qualifying income calculation. Only self employment and UK property income count.
What if I have two small businesses?
They are added together. One trade at £28,000 and another at £24,000 is £52,000 of qualifying income, which is over the current threshold.
Does MTD apply to my limited company?
Not through MTD for Income Tax. A limited company is a separate matter. If you take income from the company personally, that is dealt with through your own tax position rather than through quarterly updates.
Will HMRC tell me if I need to sign up?
Eventually, and possibly by signing you up without asking. Since September 2026 HMRC has been automatically enrolling people it believes are in scope and have not registered. It writes to the taxpayer, not to their accountant.
My income has dropped. Am I out?
Not automatically. Mandation is based on an earlier tax year’s figures, so a fall in income does not end the obligation by itself. Check your position each year rather than assuming.
I think I should be exempt. What now?
Contact HMRC before the automatic enrolment process reaches you. Exemptions exist for people who cannot reasonably use digital tools, on grounds including digital exclusion, disability, remoteness and religious belief. They are not granted automatically. Our guide to MTD exemptions sets out who qualifies.
